The physical changes of puberty are often associated with significant insecurity for adolescents. One focus of the book relates to the experience of these physical changes and how they are channeled through societal interpretations, which are always linked to specific gender images. Another emphasis is on the body shapes, presentations, and performances of young people. These are interpreted as active coping strategies in dealing with the insecurities of this life phase, as movements between adhering to societal standards of physical attractiveness and searching for personal modes of expression. The basis of the representations includes contributions from adolescents in online counseling forums as well as existing empirical studies, including research findings by the author.
