The information space in which we live has become so complex that we can no longer manage without the use of external competence. Information work—productive development of the available information space as the basis for living our lives in all its professional, public, and private aspects in an informationally secured way—is increasingly delegated to information assistants. This has long been the case for information specialists, individuals specially trained for this purpose, and it began harmlessly and helpfully with librarians. Now, it is increasingly shifting to technical information assistants and information machines, which, conceived and programmed by us humans, are becoming more and more independent, like sorcerer's apprentices.
