The starting point of this work is such a side effect, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II (HIT-II), which occurs with the use of heparin, a commonly used medication for blood coagulation prevention. Examining the costs of diseases, or in this case, a very serious side effect, is part of a relatively young science in Germany, pharmacoeconomics. The author demonstrates that it involves the economic evaluation of medications based on their costs. However, pharmacoeconomics also opens the door to other important aspects that the name might not initially suggest, such as quality of life. Recently, spending on medications has been in the spotlight.
