Product details
The wonder chambers or art chambers of the late Renaissance evolved from earlier cabinets of rarities or curiosities and represent a collection concept from the early phase of museum history that presented objects together based on their diverse origins and purposes. The term art and wonder chambers has been established through the work "Die Kunst- und Wunderkammern der Spätrenaissance" (Leipzig 1908) by Julius von Schlosser and is also commonly used in English. Schlosser describes the prehistory and origins of collecting, the secular treasure chambers of princes, the role of the curious, natural wonders, the great galleries of the 17th century, and much more. Illustrated with 102 black and white images. Reprint of the original edition from 1908.
