Die Legende vom heiligen Trinker
German, Joseph Roth, 2011Product details
Andreas, a vagabond in Paris, spends his nights under the bridges of the Seine. Life has not been kind to him; he is stranded and has become a drunkard. Yet he is also a man of honor, and when a complete stranger gives him 200 francs one evening, he is determined to donate it to a chapel of Saint Therese of Lisieux. This strange encounter triggers a series of further peculiar events, and from then on, Andreas wavers between his destructive addiction and sincere good intentions. Joseph Roth's "Legend of the Holy Drunkard," told lightly and with cheerful melancholy, which he completed in 1939 shortly before his death, continues to captivate with its touching immediacy.
