Product details

The small count family of the Luxembourgers, which steadily expanded its holdings along the western imperial border since the 10th century and often maintained closer ties to the Parisian court than to the German monarch, produced four Roman kings: Henry VII, Charles IV, Wenceslaus IV, and Sigismund. Only Johann of Luxembourg, who embodied all the chivalric attributes of his era, was denied the opportunity to acquire both the St. Wenceslas crown and the imperial crown. Archbishop Baldwin of Trier, the brother of Emperor Henry VII, influenced the events in the empire like no other elector in the first half of the 14th century. The Luxembourgers directed the affairs of the Holy Roman Empire between 1308 and 1437 and ultimately controlled the largest contiguous land complex in Eastern Central Europe with the kingdoms of Bohemia and Hungary.
