Performances in front of an audience typically evoke nothing but moral effects of a generally lesser kind. Therefore, I have long refrained from releasing the piece for performances, Brecht notes in 1956. This edition presents, due to the significant differences, the versions from 1930 and 1931 in parallel print, thus documenting the revision of the piece that Brecht undertook after the premiere, taking into account audience reactions and critiques.
