Papadiamantis' most famous story was first published in 1903 as a serialized novel in the magazine "Panathínäa." On the Aegean island of Skiathos, an aging midwife becomes a murderer of several girls in order to spare them a future life of dependence and slavery. Papadiamantis' socially critical perspective on the role of women in the society of his time, along with the outstanding linguistic and stylistic form of the text, makes "The Murderess" one of the most important works of modern Greek narrative literature.
