In "The Natural History of Religion" (1757), Hume presents a developmental history of the religious phenomenon, thereby complementing the systematically oriented questions of the dialogues. "Of Superstition and Enthusiasm" is exclusively focused on philosophical aspects of religion. In "Of the Immortality of the Soul" and "Of Suicide," Hume first systematizes the opposing arguments, then refutes them, thus not only making a case for the moral and politically-legal legitimacy of suicide but also demonstrating that the doctrine of immortality is philosophically unfounded.
