The realignment of the Bundeswehr is considered one of the most significant reform approaches in the German government and administrative organization to date. This assessment is not only associated with a reduction in the size of the armed forces, the nearly simultaneous suspension of compulsory military service, and efforts to contribute to the consolidation of the federal budget through a reduction in defense spending, but also with the overarching goal of contemporary national defense as alliance defense. As a result, a central sovereign task and policy area has undergone a fundamental examination that clearly goes beyond mere organizational modernization. It represents a reform approach that, by utilizing insights gained from the private sector and business management methods, aims for modern leadership and management.
