All moments of the tragedy, Hebbel wrote in an unpublished preface, are thus provided by the epic itself, even if often, as could not be otherwise with the tumultuous history of the old poem, in a confused and scattered form or in the most abrupt brevity. The task now was to organize them into a dramatic chain and to poetically enliven them where necessary.
