Over the centuries, the islands and halligen, which once formed a large landmass connected to the mainland, have been torn apart by numerous severe storm surges. Today, they are surrounded by the Wadden Sea, which reveals them at low tide and envelops them again at high tide. Heinrich Martens also describes the history of the islands in his book.
