Healthcare institutions are shaken by crises. Politically, they are under constant scrutiny; in times of popular budget cuts and public financial restructuring, they often undergo amputations that affect significant portions of the population. Due to their economic importance, they also attract interest, as health is a high-value asset that we are willing to invest in. "Economization" is the apt term that indicates the ongoing tensions that challenge the ethos of medical and nursing professions. Furthermore, medical innovations often lead to moral conflicts. Perhaps we need to return to some fundamental questions: What is a healthcare system, and what is its purpose? Is health a private or a public good, and what are the implications of this? Are there criteria for justice that apply?.
