With the end of military dictatorships in Latin America, the democratic successor governments faced the challenge of dealing with the human rights violations of the previous regimes. Using the examples of Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, Veit Strassner analyzes how the post-authoritarian governments positioned themselves in response to this challenge. Special attention is given to the impact of this politics of the past on the victims organized in associations, as well as their role within the political field.
