Product details
The book explores the Ottoman madrasas, as well as the origin, purpose, and spread of this institution within the Islamic cultural sphere from 622 AD until its decline. The madrasa – a space for religious education – was initially adopted by the Seljuks, who dominated parts of Anatolia from 1071 and established several madrasas until the establishment of the Ottoman principality in 1299. The Ottomans expanded the curriculum of the madrasas by introducing additional subjects and educational levels. During the Ottoman rule (approximately 1451-1600), the madrasas offered students not only theological subjects but also opportunities in the natural sciences, scholastic studies, and medicine. Territorial losses, economic difficulties, and the resulting social changes accelerated the decline of the Ottoman madrasas.
