Cape and crushed hat, walking stick and cigar. He was a man of style and, of course, eccentric. Nothing else can be expected from his stories, including his crime novellas published only posthumously, which were previously unknown to the German reader. In the last months of his life, Gilbert Keith Chesterton published a crime novella monthly in the "Storyteller." Its hero is a peculiar government official named Mr. Pond. The collection of these eight sharp-witted and brilliantly inspired stories, "The Paradoxes of Mr. Pond," was released only a year after Chesterton's death. It is Chesterton's final literary coup, and we know: only in bad detective stories is the solution of a material nature. A decade earlier, another collection of short stories, "Tales of the Overstrained Bow," was published. The heroes of these tales find themselves in bizarre adventures.
