The experience of air travel has been a recurring theme in literature and other arts from the very beginning. From depictions of balloon journeys to "heroes" of flight, and from cinematic visions of disasters to songs celebrating the beauty of flying, this volume explores the artistic interpretations of air travel. The experience of flying embodies a paradox: its barely comprehensible movement "above the clouds" is no longer celebrated as a triumph of acceleration and the overcoming of spatial boundaries. Flying has become a "void" time that one endures, bridges, overcomes, and leaves behind. How are such situations represented in literature and other arts? What alternative perceptions of air travel are thematized and aesthetically processed in contrast to this normalization of flying?.
