This book addresses all political systems in Latin America and follows the idea of creating a balance between a cross-country perspective and individualized country studies. After a general overview, the topics introduced are revisited in 20 country chapters. The country chapters first provide a chronological account of the background of the current political system. Subsequently, the political institutions, particularly the government and party system, are presented, along with an outline of political decision-making and options for action in economic policy and poverty alleviation.
