Product details
The history of male emotions in modern times has often been overlooked or told negatively: as suppression, discipline, or the disastrous unleashing of masculine affects. The historical, social, and cultural contributions of this volume revise this one-sided image. They reconstruct emotions as a constantly present component of masculinity that can articulate itself in various spheres of modern societies and also undergo historical change. Primarily using the example of German history in the 19th and 20th centuries, the relationship between masculinity and emotion is analyzed and compared across several fields of practice (marriage and family, politics and war, friendship and sexuality, cultural revolution and New Age).
Manuel Borutta (Prof. Dr.) works as a junior professor of cultural history of the Mediterranean at Ruhr University Bochum. Nina Verheyen (Dr.) is a research associate at the Institute for History at the University of Vienna.
