Eva Tolasch dedicates her discourse-analytical and qualitative study on the normative negotiation of motherhood to the question of what and who constitutes a good mother in cases of infanticide. She analyzes, starting from a crisis narrative about mothers who kill their children, five contemporary cases involving mothers and fathers accused of attempted or actual murder of their own child. The results reveal the normative patterns through which women in the examined cases qualify themselves as good mothers. The study contributes to sociological research on gender, parenthood, and care, as well as to criminological sociology and the sociology of social problems. Furthermore, the author provides insights for qualitative social research methods by opening a pathway to link case analysis with sociological discourse analysis.
