Psychoactive substances made according to herbal recipes, whose toxic ingredients induce hallucinogenic and visionary states of consciousness while establishing contact with realms beyond everyday reality, have been used at all times by shamanic priests, medicine men, and witches in their cult rituals and practices. Herbal recipes provided the materials for love potions and forgetfulness brews, for dreams of flying and orgiastic feasts, for visions of gods and devils, as well as contact with the world of the deceased; they liberated the spirit from the shackles of the body. These were the psychedelic experiences of herbal witches in the past and present. Based on the few ancient sources and grounded in the historical image of witches, the author seeks to explore the active ingredients and effects of these plant-based fantasies.
