“Now I am king,” says sixteen-year-old Louis after a successful coup. He banishes his power-hungry mother Maria de' Medici to Blois and rewards his co-conspirators. But one problem plagues the court: the king has still not consummated his marriage with the young Infanta Anna, and yet the country needs a Dauphin! In stark contrast to his passionate father Henri, Louis fears the female sex. The mere presence of over a hundred chattering, giggling Spanish ladies-in-waiting is repugnant to him. Nevertheless, he decides to attend his sister's wedding night to first understand the practicalities of his procreative duties.
However, Louis also wants to be a good king and a strong ruler for the French. He must endure seven years of intense internal struggles against the ever-opposing princes and his still scheming mother until he finally decides in 1623 to appoint the brilliant Richelieu to his council.
