Product details

In 1873, Dolfortrie described, along with illustrations, a small mammal skull from the phosphorite of Sainte-Néboule de Béduer (Lot.). He recognized the fossil as a primate and named it "Palacolemur Betillei." Gaudry, to whom Dolfortrie sent the skull along with a matching mandible found shortly thereafter for examination, confirmed the animal's affiliation with the primates and stated that the materials from Béduer were specifically identical to the mandible from the Paris gypsum, which Gervais had described under the name Aphelotherium Duvernoyi and classified among the omnivorous pachyderms. He also suggested that it was highly likely that the upper and lower jaw fragments of the same provenance, which had previously been described by Cuvier as Adapis and by Yon de Blainville as Adapis parisiensis, were related.
