In the European integration process, since the initiation of the project for the establishment and completion of the internal market, increased attention has also been given to the social dimension of the internal market - and thus to the community's activities in the social field. The terms "social Europe," "European social space," "European Social Union," and "social deficit" of Europe are all referenced. The adoption of the "Community Charter of the Fundamental Social Rights of Workers" in 1989 by the heads of state and government of eleven member states has impressively documented the community's commitment to achieving not only deeper integration in the economic sphere but also enhanced integration in the social sphere. The relevant provisions of the Treaty on European Union reflect this objective.
