Die Spinne von Maschhad
German, Mana Neyestani, 2018Product details
Based on interviews with two documentary filmmakers, Mana Neyestani tells the story of Said Hanai, who murdered sixteen prostitutes, some of whom were drug addicts, in the holy city of Mashhad. He lured all of his victims to his home and strangled them, which is why he was publicly referred to as "The Spider of Mashhad." In addition to the murderer and his relatives, the judge who sentenced Saeed to death also shares his perspective. This graphic novel illustrates how the extremely conservative interpretation of Islam by the Iranian authorities is used by some as a license for vigilante justice to eliminate what they deem as the so-called scum, such as prostitution and drugs. Protests erupted during Said's arrest in Mashhad.
