Die Stadt der Neuchristen
German, Benjamin Scheller, 2013Product details
Pursued by the Inquisition, thousands of Jews converted to Christianity in the Kingdom of Naples around 1292: the only mass conversion of Jews to Christianity outside the Iberian Peninsula and Spanish territories during the Middle Ages. By the mid-16th century, the converted Jews, as well as their descendants, were recorded in various regions of the southern Italian mainland under designations such as "Neofiti" (from Greek: "Neophytos" = "newly planted"), "Christiani Novi," or "Cristiani Novelli." Even generations later, the descendants of the converts were marked as newcomers in Christian society. They belonged, yet at the same time, they did not. "The City of the New Christians" addresses the history of the converted Jews of the Kingdom of Naples and their descendants for the first time in a monographic work.
