Product details

The Staufer are undoubtedly among the most powerful and influential dynasties of the High Middle Ages. Initially as dukes and later as kings and emperors, they significantly shaped the fate of Germany and Europe. This book tells the story of the Staufer, starting from their presumed beginnings as counts of Riesgau, through the Swabian ducal title, to the imperial throne. Three of the Staufer rulers were crowned emperor in Rome: Frederick I Barbarossa, his son Henry VI, and his grandson Frederick II. Long reigns, especially those of the two Fredericks, provided the Staufer with opportunities for long-term action and influence. Perhaps not least for this reason, they remain among the most fascinating medieval rulers to this day. Times of noticeable change and profound transformation posed great challenges to Staufer rule.
