With three books that have all become foundational documents of postmodern thought, Jaques Derrida entered the philosophical stage in 1967: "De la grammatologie," "L'écriture et la différence," and "La voix et le phénomène." The latter, presented here in a new translation by Hans-Dieter Gondek, develops Derrida's perspective on central sign-theoretical theorems of Western metaphysics and phenomenological language theory through a scrupulous and illuminating reading of Edmund Husserl's "Logical Investigations." "The Voice and the Phenomenon" is thus not only a lucid and critical introduction to the thinking of "différance" and Husserl's concept of the sign, but also a prime example of a deconstructive reading.
