I am free because I remain torn between hope and doubt, knowledge and uncertainty, and because this sentence represents an outcome yet is no answer. In all areas of life, we are expected to take responsibility. But is our will truly free to act responsibly? Research highlighting the external determination of humans through genes, epigenetic, and social factors increasingly makes self-determination and responsibility appear as an illusion. However, humans perceive themselves as self-determined free beings. A part of people, like a part within a person, escapes this conflict through repression, while another part silently agrees to justify a pleasure-driven, selfish life. Yet, this is not enough for the search for truth. Helmut Hesse describes the doubts and the hopeful search within this contradiction.
