Sebastian Kessler highlights two developments in his analysis of the discourse on inequality for the period from 1975 to 2009: Social inequality in health is a scientific concept that opened up a new perspective on reality starting in 1975. It is now possible to identify societal differences in illness and death and to present them as a problem. However, with the political appropriation of this concept, the responsibility for health shifts from society as a whole to institutions such as health insurance companies or to the individual. Thus, knowledge about inequality becomes a means of managing society. To counteract the explosion of costs in the healthcare system, the construction of knowledge about inequality leads to a regulation of life within the contexts of inequality.
