The four "noble truths" - the truths of suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the eightfold path leading to the cessation of suffering - form the foundation of the Buddhist worldview. They are a doctrine of salvation that Buddha preached and which has come down to us translated into the Indian dialect of Pali. This volume contains a representative selection from the canonical and non-canonical texts of Buddhism in a new translation that was created only in the 1980s.
