Product details

One of the most performed works by Antonio Vivaldi is the concert series The Four Seasons, which was published in 1725. Each of these concertos portrays one of the four seasons and is written for a violin and string orchestra. In Vivaldi's oeuvre, this concert series holds a special place, as each of the four concertos is accompanied by a preceding poem, known as a Sonetto dimostrativo. The individual lines of text were incorporated into the corresponding sections of the musical score, thereby clarifying the programmatic depiction in the music. At the same time, these verses serve as interpretative aids for the musicians.

The fourth part of this concert series, dedicated to Signor Venceslao Conte de Marzin, is titled Winter and is set in f minor. As in the other concertos, various typical natural phenomena and human activities for the season, such as Orrido Vento (terrible wind) and Caminar sopral giaccio (ice skating), are imitated and brought to life through the music. These original Italian verses and additions can be found in the score at the sections designated by Vivaldi, with the respective German translation provided as a footnote at the bottom of the page. Additionally, the edition includes occasional notes on further annotations by the editor.

This clear score, published on July 15, 2002, in the C. F. Peters Edition, includes parts for violin and piano. It features Vivaldi's most famous work in four individual editions. The accompanying CD contains the complete cycle of The Four Seasons.
