The tumultuous 14 years of the Weimar Republic represent one of the central themes in historical research. Particularly the final phase from 1929 to 1933 continues to be a subject of controversy today. Reiner Marcowitz analyzes this crisis period of the first German Republic from both structural and chronological perspectives. He provides a detailed account of the effects of the Great Depression. He then examines the development of the Grand Coalition, the last democratically legitimized government of Weimar, and the terms of the subsequent presidential chancellors Brüning, Papen, and Schleicher. Finally, he analyzes the rise of the NSDAP to a popular party and the Nazi takeover of government on January 30, 1933.
