Product details
Dr. Karl Wanderer, assistant director at the Royal Mineralogical and Geological Museum in Dresden, presents the most important animal fossils from the Cretaceous period of the Kingdom of Saxony in words and images. The Cretaceous, also known as the Age of Chalk, began around 145 million years ago with the end of the Jurassic and ended about 66 million years ago. The name "Cretaceous" was given in 1822 due to the heavily calcium carbonate-rich fossils of crustaceans, corals, mollusks, snails, and single-celled organisms found in the rocks of this system. Chalk is one of three naturally occurring rock forms of calcium carbonate, alongside limestone and marble. The significant animal fossils in the Kingdom of Saxony are described from the wealth of this fossil fauna, illustrated with numerous plates and images, in a reprint of the original edition from 1909.
