The philosophy of spirit is the most vigorously discussed part of Hegel's system to this day. The theoretical potential of its responses to the challenges of modernity is far from exhausted. Michael Quante explains the fundamental concepts and central theses of Hegel's philosophy of spirit in light of the current discussion in European and Anglo-American philosophy. The focus of the presentation is on the Phenomenology of Spirit and the foundational principles of the philosophy of right. Here, Hegel develops central concepts of his practical philosophy, such as action, person, or will, and explores the possibilities of justifying ethical norms and social institutions within the tension between individual autonomy and social embedding.
