Product details

The volume includes contributions to a symposium on "The Future of Grammar - The Grammar of the Future," which was held from February 12 to 13, 2016, in honor of Werner Abraham's 80th birthday at LMU Munich. It addresses the significance of grammar writing, grammar theory, and universal grammar at a time that is increasingly turning away from the description and explanation of grammatical structures, as well as from cross-linguistic generalizations, which amounts to a de-scientification of linguistics. The volume demonstrates that the grammar of the future will still rely on high-level analytical generalizations; this is exemplified in contributions on modality, passives, auxiliary selection, the grammar of speech acts, and not least in the example of encoding future tense in grammar, as well as other grammatical categories and phenomena.
