Product details

The focus of the presentation is on images and aesthetic objects created by outsiders and spiritists. A key aspect of the investigation centers on the images and photographs that emerged during the last major wave of spiritualist activities around 1850. This movement originated in America and soon spread to England, France, and Germany, continuing to influence ghost films and similar genres today. This presentation is embedded in the study of the afterlife and its associated images and treatises, which have evolved since the inkblot drawings of Justinus Kerner and the spiritist-inspired works of Victor Hugo. Particularly interesting is the fact that academically trained artists at the turn of the 20th century also sought to capture messages from the beyond in their artworks. The history of these representations of another world is traced back to the theories of Franz Anton Mesmer and the inspirations of Emanuel Swedenborg. The influence of Swedenborg on the diverse spiritualist circles in America and England is particularly emphasized. Outsiders are involved in this development in various ways. Just as the transitions from art to mediumistic imagery are fluid, so too are the transitions from self-taught creators to psychologically disturbed and hospitalized individuals.
