On July 20, 1969, the first astronaut set foot on the moon. One man who particularly benefited from the accolades of this human adventure was Wernher von Braun. After all, under his leadership, the old Peenemünde engineers, previously designers of the so-called V2 retaliation weapon, developed the rocket that took the Apollo capsule to the Earth's satellite. "Moonstruck" demonstrates that Wernher von Braun and his top engineers were active beneficiaries of the murderous Nazi forced labor program during the construction of the V2. The author realistically portrays Peenemünde as a microcosm of the Third Reich, filled with committed Nazis, opportunists, followers, and a concentration camp. The later claims by those involved of a strict separation between this idyllic world on Usedom and the V2 production by tortured prisoners in the underground Mittelwerk near Nordhausen place the book where it rightly belongs.
