Product details

Louise Michel (1830-1905) - for some "the bloodthirsty wolf," for others "the red virgin" - is regarded as a symbolic figure of the Paris Commune in the spring of 1871. For the first time in history, workers took power. Louise Michel not only organized the supply of food and medical care for the hungry and wounded, but she also participated in club debates and armed struggle. As an illegitimate child of a maid, she was raised by her grandparents in the spirit of the Enlightenment. After the suppression of the Paris Commune, Louise Michel was put on trial and deported in 1873 to the penal colony of New Caledonia, east of Australia. There, she learned the Kanak language and conveyed their myths and culture in two writings. In 1880, the Communard was released through an amnesty. After a triumphant reception in Paris, Louise Michel immediately resumed her fight for the revolution. Through numerous lectures and her advocacy for the rights of women and workers, she became one of the most prominent representatives of anarchism and the revolutionary labor movement. Her courageous struggles against exploitation, oppression, discrimination against women, war, colonialism, and racism, as well as for child-friendly education and a respectful relationship with nature and animals, remain relevant today.
