Walter Dirks (1901-1991) was a leftist Catholic publicist and intellectual, a keen observer and sharp-tongued commentator who operated beyond the increasingly entrenched divides of ideological, political, and religious factions in Germany throughout the 20th century. Throughout his life, he claimed to be both a devout Catholic and a committed socialist. Consequently, Dirks found himself "between the chairs": "too black for the Reds, too red for the Blacks" - as Theodor Heuss once characterized him. Whether as the founder of the Frankfurter Hefte, head of the WDR cultural department, or as a young man before 1933, Dirks powerfully engaged in societal debates as a public intellectual. His commitment to peace, socialism, and church reforms transcended national borders, and he established himself as a passionate advocate.
