The crime novel must be credibly motivated, both in the initial situation and in the resolution. It must consist of plausible actions by plausible people under plausible circumstances, keeping in mind that plausibility is largely a matter of style: a question of effect, not of fact. One writer may succeed with a pattern that would simply seem ridiculous in the hands of another, less talented one.
