Product details

The third volume of the unique collaboration between the Museum of Modern Art and Diogenes focuses this time on a woman, one of the most fascinating personalities in the art world of the 20th century: the painter and designer Sonia Delaunay. Born in 1885 in present-day Ukraine, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg as well as at several German art academies before moving to Paris in 1904. Together with her second husband, the painter Robert Delaunay, she was one of the pioneers of abstract painting, particularly geometric abstraction. Together, they developed what is known as Orphism, which emphasizes the simultaneous contrasts of colors. The goal of Orphism, an evolution of Cubism, was to create a pure painting that could stand in contrast to pure music. The strong, vibrant colors contrasted with the more monochromatic painting styles.
