During the construction of the western bypass of Aalen (Ostalbkreis) from 1997 to 1998, numerous archaeological artifacts and remains of building structures were unexpectedly uncovered. During a rescue excavation conducted by the State Office for Monument Preservation of Baden-Württemberg, several wooden posts were recovered, which had been excellently preserved in the moist environment of the Sauerbach valley floor. A chronological analysis dated these timbers to the last years of the 3rd century AD. According to the excavators, part of the extensive ceramic finds consisted of fragments of Germanic vessels. Thus, the site Aalen-Sauerbach provided the oldest absolutely dated remnants of the Alamanni, who resettled the area after the Roman Empire's territory was retracted following the withdrawal of the Limes. This archaeological study will examine both the structural remains and the artifacts found.
