Participation is on everyone's lips. When you open the newspaper, it often happens that local councils pose for photos together with their youth councils. They want to show that great value is placed on youth in their community, and thus participation is encouraged. Municipalities are also striving for greater openness towards children: for example, they are trying to give young people the opportunity to exercise their right to participate through special children's consultation hours. Through play planning in cities and municipalities, children and young people have the chance to express their wishes for a child-friendly design of their community. Additionally, in child and youth services under SGB VIII, children and young people are to be involved in decisions that affect them according to their age. These are all areas where participation takes place.
