Product details

On June 20, 1995, at 5:00 PM, Shell U.K. announced that it would forgo the sinking of the Brent Spar. This marked the end of a significant chapter regarding the influence of external stakeholders. The company was compelled by worldwide protests to dispose of the platform on land, despite the British government having already granted written approval for the Atlantic disposal plan. This occurred to a company that was considered one of the best-managed in many U.S. management magazines at the time and undoubtedly had market influence and excellent corporate governance. However, the incident highlights the vulnerability of even a market leader like Shell in dealing with stakeholders. There was a failure to engage in dialogue with the environmental organization Greenpeace, which had long been advocating for land disposal.
