The lives of people are limited by death. It is often discussed and written about what consequences this has or should have for an individual's actions. This knowledge of death usually remains abstract for people. However, what about the confrontation with the concrete dead? On screen, blood often flows, explicitly shown, and protagonists frequently die. In this regard, seasoned viewers can be shocked very little. But what about images of real dead people; of deceased individuals who were close to the viewer in life? Many people find the thought of taking a photograph of their deceased relatives unsettling, if not downright shocking. They are confronted with the fact that in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was common practice to take a final photograph of a dead person and display it.
