In today's society, especially in Western industrialized countries, food is often attributed an abusive function. This results from food surplus, individualism, a strong consumer orientation, and the development of a functionalist, depersonalized body image. Psychological conflicts and social problems seem to be compensated for by food, as it is well known that eating and drinking keeps body and soul together. The reactions to emotional tensions are diverse; some people consume vast amounts of food, while others reduce their intake to a minimum. The increased occurrence of eating disorders has long been common in competitive sports. The reason for this is the need to achieve peak performance, which requires a variety of self-responsible measures.
