According to the Federal Ministry of Health and the German Alzheimer Society, there are currently around 1.6 million people with dementia in Germany. Each year, about 300,000 new cases are added, leading to a projected doubling of affected individuals by the year 2050. Approximately 60 to 80 percent of people with dementia will enter a residential care facility during the course of their illness. In light of demographic changes, the issue of nutrition in old age is becoming increasingly important, as malnutrition is already a widespread problem in residential care facilities and is unlikely to lose relevance in the future. Currently, more than 50 percent of residents in these facilities are at risk of malnutrition. The risk is significantly higher for residents with a higher level of care needs.
