Due to the growing economic significance of professional football, it is increasingly coming under the scrutiny of jurisprudence. Many football-specific regulations still originate from a time of traditional amateur sports, which have little in common with today’s commercial realities. Legal instruments that were once standard in sports have long since failed to meet the current demands of the professional football business. Many traditional clubs are now separating their football departments into corporations to remain economically competitive. As a consequence, they must adhere to the relevant corporate law norms. Furthermore, football is becoming increasingly international, meaning that European legal components can now also play a role. As a result of these developments, professional football is now also becoming attractive to foreign investors.
