Although there is currently much discussion about the fairness of educational opportunities, special schools represent a forgotten aspect of education. Even the PISA studies have hardly taken special education students into account, despite the fact that in Germany nearly one in twenty students is now taught in a special school. In some German federal states, there are ten different types of special schools—educational forms that often do not exist in other countries. The UN inspector Vernor Munoz for the right to education has therefore criticized Germany for its policy of segregation. German experts in special education are also calling for the abolition of the special school system.
